The State of Jharkhand comprises of the Chota Nagpur and Santhal Pargana regions.

The geographical area of the State is 79,714 sq. kms. Forests cover an area of 23,605 sq. kms, i.e. almost 30% of the area of the State. Bamboo forests cover 843 sq. kms, of which 472 sq. kms fall within Protected Areas. These forests are primarily in the districts of Medininagar (Palamau), Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, Dhanbad and Giridih.


There are also substantial bamboo resources outside of forest areas, on private land holdings.

Most of the bamboo from the State goes to meet the needs of pulp and paper industries.

According to a survey report of the State Forest Department, 75% of bamboo is used for pulp and paper, 23% for houshold and constructional needs, and 2% for bamboo based cottage industries.
