Indian Council for Forestry Research & Education (ICFRE)

Established in 1986, ICFRE is India’s premier forestry research organisation. It is an Autonomous Council of the Ministry of Forests and Environment, Government of India and has been created to formulate, organise, direct, and manage forestry research.
The Council carries out, promotes and coordinates forestry education, research and its application. It maintains a National Library and Information Centre for forestry, and acts as a clearing-house for related research and information. It has an active extension programme and provides consultancy services.
Recent work in the bamboo sector includes:
- Studies on natural durability and efficacy of preservatives for bamboo (FRI)
- Standardisation of nursery techniques for 6 species (RFRI)
- Market and price information (FRI)
- Survey, selection, ex-situ conservation of Himalayan bamboo (FRI)
- In-vitro multiplication of Dendrocalamus asper, Bambusa wamin (FRI)
- Bio-ecological studies on insect pests of bamboo (FRI)
- Seasoning & preservation techniques for bamboos and rattans (IWST)
There are two ICFRE maintained bambusetums – the oldest in the country at FRI Dehra Dun, and a newly established bambusetum at RFRI Jorhat
ICFRE has developed packages of practices for cultivation of Dendrocalamus strictus for NMBA

The Council has 8 Research Institutes and 3 Advanced Centres at different locations in the country. ICFRE institutions have extensive and long experience of bamboo and have worked on silviculture, propagation and management, as well as on product development.
