Bamboo based Cold Storage

Most of the agricultural produce is perishable in nature and requires certain levels of temperature and humidity to hold the horticultural produce in good condition for longer periods. During the peak harvesting season, excess produce gets damaged and totally wasted due to lack of storage facilities.

One of the ways to avoid this is the stocking of fruit and vegetable in cold storage. The low temperature of cold storage retards the respiratory heat generation and activities of micro organisms.

For diversification of application of bamboo based structures, M/s A.B. Composite, an NMBA supported unit has developed and tested bamboo based cold storage. These cold storage use technology of sandwiched walled (bamboo boards and PUF) structures wall which leads to decrease in thermal conductivity and hence permits lower rate of heat transfer.

The Mission is demonstrating bamboo based cold storages at following locations:

  • Centre of Excellence for Fruits (CEF), Sirsa, Haryana
  • Centre of Excellence for Vegetables (CEV), Karnal, Haryana
  • Model Floriculture Centre (CFC), Panchkula, Haryana
  • Horticulture Hub, Jantia Hills District ,Meghalaya
  • Dewlieh Horticulture Hub, Ri Bhoi District, Meghalaya
  • Rongram Horticulture Hub ,Garo Hills District, Meghalaya
  • The technical details of bamboo based cold storages are as follows:

    Cooling Unit

  • 2 numbers of Condensing and Evaporation unit with capacity of
    15000BTU
  • The units are capable to maintain the temperature up to 2° C inside the cold storage.
  • 2 numbers of humidifiers to maintain controlled humidity and Oxygen level
