NMBA facilitates Bamboo Policy for States
Bamboo has been identified as the resource for the future with immense potentials. India is uniquely endowed with large resources of bamboo and a deep rooted tradition of skills and usage.
It is a catalyst for development, enlarging economic opportunities, employment and livelihoods. NMBA has been striving for the overall development of the sector. Access to the resource by the user agencies particularly due to the existing transit regimes and felling rules under the various forest acts. The industrial development policies will also have linkage to this.
However the development in the sector needs interdisciplinary support and initiatives. For this a state specific bamboo policy has to be brought in place. A few states in the country has already brought out their state policy. Some of these are Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Nagaland. Others like Orissa, Maharashtra and Meghalaya are in the process of preparing such policy. The process reflects the views and aspirations of all stake holders.
NMBA on its part is facilitating and supporting such stake holder meetings and workshops to evolve appropriate policy. This also helps in the desired uniformity in common aspects, which is very relevant when inter-sectoral matters and cross boundary issues are anticipated in the effort.

International workshop on Germplasm Resource Collection, Utilisation, Research and Development of Indian Bamboos at IHBT, Palampur April 18-20 2007
The NMBA sponsored workshop was conducted in collaboration with IHBT, Palampur. 30 scientists from all over India and abroad participated and deliberated on their experience in the aforementioned topic. The four bamboo experts from Colombia interacted with the participants. A talk on silviculture and management of Guadua angustifolia by Dr. Juan Carloswas appreciated by the participants. Dr. Ximena Londono made a lucid presentation on? Bamboo resources of Colombia, their propagation and management and utilization.
The sessions provided a? effective forum for interactions. Mr. V.S. Oberoi, Mission Director and Mr. Sudhir Pande Advisor NMBA provided the necessary orientation and guidance to the workshop.
The infrastructure, activities and bamboo resource in IHBT are a treat for the visitors. The participants greatly enjoyed the visit and surely got stimulated and inspired.
A workable recommendation on research areas to be addressed in this sector has also emerged. Dr. Anil Sood Scientist IHBT and his team facilitated the workshop.
There was also exchange of propagation material among the participants. This would pave the way for a strong networking amongst bamboo researchers and field practitioners and exchange of information and plant material at all India level.
A compendium on current trends in? bamboo propagation? by way of proceedings is planned for publication.
National level workshop on bamboo cultivation, multiplication and locational trials KFRI 21st to 22nd December
Bamboo cultivation practices are being standardized at various locations by taking up multi-locational trials at selected institutions. Some of the parameters being tested are : types of irrigation, organic and inorganic fertilizers and their quantities, spacing, management practices, use of TC and vegetative plant material. The plantations were established in 2005 and the results have started to come.
The Mission is establishing centers for vegetative propagation. Already 10 centers have started to produce plant material of commercially important bamboo species.
Three bambusetums are being established at Guwahati, Hyderabad and Pantnagar to hold good quality germplasm of bamboo species. To discuss the progress of these activities, a meet is being organised at Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), Peechi from 21st to 22nd December. All the agencies participating in the activities will attend the workshop.
National Symposium on Plant Biotechnology
FRI, Dehradun on 12-14?October.
As part of centenary year celebration of Forest Research institute, Dehradun, NMBA in collaboration with FRI organized a National Symposium on Plant Biotechnology with focus on commercial aspects of tissue culture of bamboo and bamboo plantations. The deliberations were extremely focused on different methods of micro-propagation of bamboo for commercially viable species, including standardization of suitable hormones and process parameters. Dr.C.K.John of NCL, Pune made a detail presentation on in vitro and in vivo flowering of B.bambos including pollen viability. Details of micro-propagation of B.nutans and B.tulda carried out at TERI in terms of shoot multiplication and rooting percentage was also presented by Dr.Sanjay Saxena, TERI.
A Manual of micro-propagation of bamboo published by the NMBA was also brought out and presented in the symposium. It was also emphasised by the NMBA that taking into account the constraints associated with conventional methods of propagation of bamboos, it would be desirable to undertake mass multiplication by tissue culture. However, irrespective of the mode of propagation (conventional or tissue culture) adopted, the mother clumps from which propagules are derived or in vitro cultures are initiated, should be of proven quality.
Entrepreneur meet 2006 An entrepreneur met?held at Coorg on 24th July at Ponnampet
