Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI), Jorhat
RFRI has taken on a range of activities in the bamboo sector. It has:
- Standardised nursery techniques for propagation of major bamboo species of the North East for selected bamboo species.
- Conducted germplasm evaluation of selected bamboo species for different end uses.
- Taken up studies on distribution dynamics of Bamboo and Canes and their ex-situ conservation
RFRI is implementing a soil and river bank stabilisation project on Majuli island in Assam through bamboo based plantation, under an NMBA project.

An ICFRE institution, the RFRI was established in 1988 to carry out research in basic and applied fields of forestry. It caters to the forestry needs of the North East, and carries out research and extension activities in the areas of ecology, regeneration, management and improvement of forests and shifting cultivation.
