Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI), Peechi
Among KFRi's activities in bamboo sector are:
- Storage techniques developed for increasing the shelf-life of seeds.
- Vegetative propagation methods standardised for several species.
- Micro propagation methods standardised for several species.
- Establishment of a germplasm collection of 42 species including endemic and exotic ones.
- Bamboo resources in southern India and the Andamans were studied. Homesteads in Kerala were shown to produce more bamboo than the forests as shown by a detailed survey.
- Nursery technology developed for raising seedlings of different species.
- Plantation trials of bamboo carried out to prevent soil erosion in hill slopes and along river banks
The following projects have been undertaken with KFRI:
- Identification of field keys for 14 species of bamboo
- Web CD Hosting - Development of bibliography of world bamboo
- Development of standards for round & split bamboo

The KFRI is an autonomous institution established in 1975 by the Government of Kerala. Situated in the midst of a tropical forest at Peechi in Central Kerala, it is a research institute specialising in forestry, biodiversity, non-wood forest products and wood science, with a special emphasis on bamboo and rattan.
