Development of wear resistant coatings for cutting and processing tools used in bamboo processing industries
The International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), Hyderabad. has been tasked by the NMBA to identify suitable tool material, coating technique (ESC, boronising or other PVD processes) and appropriate coating materials to provide a cost effective solution for adoption by the bamboo-based manufacturing industries.
Subsequent to identification of suitable tool material/coating/coating techniques, the technology would be available for transfer and commercialisation. The project necessitates close interaction between the resource institution (ARCI), machinery manufacturers and users.

The epidermal layer of bamboo is remarkably tough to work with, attributable to the significant presence of silica in the smooth, waxy skin.
This is particularly true of sympodial bamboo. It leads to accelerated wearing of cutting tools, added replacement costs and lowered efficiencies. Machining processes, of conversion of culm to splits and slivers are also difficult because of fibre composition and alignment.
