Development and standardisation of technology for construction of bamboo sandwich composite materials and products

The RV-TIFAC Composites Design Centre at Bangalore has developed innovative technologies of bamboo composite sandwich materials and products.  The CDC assists entrepreneurial ventures for the production of bamboo composites.

The project seeks to develop, improve and disseminate technologies for bamboo based composite products and applications.

The following activities have been carried out:

  • Characterisation of bamboo- glass fibre composite Materials
  • Low-cost, prefabricated community toilet block, and housing systems, using glass-bamboo fibre sandwich composite materials have been designed and prototypes prepared under the project
  • Corrugated roofing material, using bamboo mat – glass fibre composite has been developed. A product range using bamboo based composite materials has been developed.
  • A major workshop and exhibition was held at the CDC campus in Bangalore on 16 – 17 January 2004 to showcase the technology, and products and applications.

Bamboo sandwich composites are mixtures of bamboo fibres and polymeric materials, with or without hybridisation with other fibres, processed under controlled temperature and pressure to obtain a class of products having superior properties than the individual components. Composites have high strength to weight ratio, durability, dimensional stability, amenability to be engineered to any complex shape or size and above all low cost of production.  The technology involves the processes of hybridisation and reinforcement of bamboo fibres with glass, jute, coir and other fibres, mixing with polymers and processing at high temperature and pressure.
