Development of maturity marking systems for intensive cultivation of bamboo

Developed by K.S.Sethi, Director Biotechnology, Government of Tripura

Bamboo culms are best harvested when they are 3-4years of age. Under field conditions, it is difficult to ascertain which culms are between 3-4 years of age. A marking system for ensuring harvest of good quality bamboo is essential.

A colour code marking system for bamboo has been developed - the Tripura Colour Code marking system (TCC marking system) for bamboo:

Culms produced in a year would be marked with a band 3” wide at breast height level that is at a height of 1.37 meters above ground level. The colour code designated for different years are as follows:

  • 2004 - Red
  • 2005 - Yellow
  • 2006 - Blue
  • 2007 - White
  • 2008 - Black

After 2008, the order of colours would be repeated i.e., for 2009- Red –Yellow- Blue- White, and 2013- Black. Normally culms are not to be retained beyond 5 years.
