Field identification keys for commercially significant species

This project was carried out by Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi, with Dr. Muktesh Kumar as the Project Coordinator.

Existing information on specie characterisation is available in a technical form, making it usable only to persons with a technical background. The Mission felt that the characteristics of the bamboo species need to be given in a user friendly format to effort to cater to the field worker and the lay person who may not have a taxonomy or even a botany background.

The objective of this study was to prepare and disseminate field identification keys, supported by illustrations and photograph, for commercially important bamboo species.  The information collected under this study has since been incoporated in The Bamboo Book, published by the Mission.
