Testing of physical, chemical and mechanical properties of bamboo culms, slivers and composites  of identified species

The study was taken up at three levels:
1. Green bamboo culms,
2. Bamboo slivers / strips treated and dried,
3. Bamboo composites.

The following mechanical properties were tested:

  1. Tensile strength parallel to grains
  2. Compressive strength parallel to grains
  3. Shear strength parallel to grains
  4. Flexural strength and bending elasticity modulus
  5. Density
  6. Compressive strength
  7. Hardness
  8. Abrasion Resistance

Chemical tests for moisture content, starch, silica and lingo-cellulose content have also been carried out.

Green bamboo culms, bamboo slivers/strips treated and dried and bamboo composites were supplied by M/s Emmbee Forest Products Pvt. Ltd. Bamboos were obtained from State Forest Research Institute (SFRI), Itanagar.

The project was carried out by Aerospace Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay with Prof. NK Naik as Principal Investigator
