Dendrocalamus stocksii (D. stocksii) a near solid bamboo being propagated.

At IWST (an ICFRE Institution), Bangalore, the  NMBA has supported a Vegetative Propagation Centre (VPC). This centre has been propagating Guadua angustifolia using leafy branches and D.stocksii with culm cutting and branch cutting.  The species do not  produce  viable seeds though flowering is reported sporadically. IWST has perfected the culm cutting technique by modifying existing methods.
Due to the near solid nature of the culms, hormone application to the cavity in D.stocksii is limited. For this, hormone soaked in cotton is provided in the nodes externally and this is found to be effective. The multiplication is carried out by using propagation material from selected superior clones. Over 5000 plants are produced for ready to plant during coming planting season.
The species of D.stocksii is valued for many applications and is preferred in the region particularly for construction, furniture making etc.
