BAMBOO BASED POLYHOUSE (Sikkim)
?
Use of polyhouses to ensure controlled environmental condition for growing flowers and vegetables, is on the rise during last few years. Using bamboo as structural material in polyhouses is new application segment, which we are trying to be modeled on our experience, gained by using whole bamboo in various buildings erected throughout the country.?? The use of whole bamboo with necessary emphasis on treatment, jointing and aesthetics were to be highlighted. This segment has potential for value added applications of bamboo by utilizing its inherent structural strength as well as by ensuring cost competitiveness vis-à-vis steel based polyhouses.

An innovative design using natural material like Bamboos slashes the setup costs of green house by half. As a renewable resource like Bamboo is used instead of steel, the polyhouses so built help mitigate global climate change. The use of Bamboo also provides income to the rural economy.

NMBA has collaborated with M/s Thousand Petals for the construction of bamboo based polyhouses at many places. 2000 sq mt size polyhouse has been constructed at G.B.Pant University, Pantnagar. Various sizes of Bamboo based polyhouses has also been constructed for demonstration in Sikkim and West Bengal.

Project 1: Children’s Park, Mataur, Kangra for Himachal Pradesh Tourism under Mid-end Whole Bamboo Demonstration

This was a part of overall effort of the mission to create awareness of the usage of bamboo by promotion, adoption and usage. The technical, financial and training support has been extended from NMBA.

Vdesign.purple, short listed Implementing agency by NMBA, has been working in this field of bamboo construction, bamboo furniture and handicrafts with 4 years experience. In the earlier process of working, vdp has two teams of trained bamboo masons at disposal for undertaking the implementing works.

H P tourism was keen on developing bamboo based demonstration structure at Kangra valley, as there is abundant bamboo available in the area. As well as this is one of the prime tourist corridor within H.P, connecting Pathankot to Manali, and near to Dharamshala/Mcleodganj, which itself is tourist hotspot. H.P state tourism has sanctioned other Rs.33 lacs for the further development of same park, with keeping bamboo as main building material.

The project components are (1) Multi-functional Hall, (2) Bamboo Tunnels, 3.nos and (3) Bamboo Play Equipment, the whole ideology behind design has been on user experience. Where the user has many things at his disposal for exploration, children too would learn while interacting with the components of the park.

Pressure treated bamboos have been used as the main structural components, forming the main columns, rafters, diagonal supports and other components of the structures. Colombian technique of construction has been adopted, with steel reinforced column anchorage, cement mortar in-filled jointing inter-nodes, plated with steel strap. The complete structure has been divided into components, which are replicable and could be erected on site. The roofing has been laid with powder coated CGI sheets.

The project has completed within stipulated time frame. Complete documentation has been prepared depicting the stages of site works with detailed details for execution and has been handed over to NMBA for reference purpose.
