Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (TBGRI), Kerala

TBGRI is an organisation doing pioneering work in the areas of conservation, reproductive biology, breeding and propagation. The activities of the institute include:

  • Setting up of bambusetum in April 1987; by 1991 the number of species had increased to 35. It now has 660 accessions belonging to 60 species. The collection includes species mainly from the Western Ghats, North-Eastern region of India, South East Asia and a few cultivated ones.?
  • Phenological studies, supported by the International Plant Genetic Research institute, Italy (IPGRI) have been carried out on promising Asian bamboos and on standardisation of low cost method of macro-propagation. These studies have focused on the phenological and growth characteristics of 10 bamboo species (Bambusa bambos, Bambusa polymorpha, Bambusa vulgaris, Cephalostachyum pergacile, Dendrocalamus brandisii, Dendrocalamus giganteus, Dendrocalamus strictus, Melocanna baccifera, Ochlandra scriptoria and Thyrsostachys siamensis) and have established and standardised macroproliferation methods for five species.
  • 12 commercially viable species that can be cultivated in Kerala were identified.
  • Low cost techniques were standardised for the production of easy-to-carry polybag saplings. Macroproliferation trials were conducted in nine species. Suitable rooting medium, optimum time for further splitting etc. were standardised.? The positive effect of humidity in macroproliferation is confirmed and recommended.? The production capacity is now 20,000 saplings an year.
  • 80,000 saplings of bamboo have been distributed to farmers, paper and pulp industries, plantation organisations like the Kerala Forest Department, Kerala Forest Development Corporation and NGOs.?
